While Prime Minister Narendra Modi gets reported in the media on regular basis, there is very little mention of his personal life. Modi’s first publicly acknowledged about his marriage and wife when he filed his nomination papers to contest the Lok Sabha elections. Since then there has been lot of speculation about his marriage. While Modi’s life has been a public book, details about his wife hardly gets any mention.
The first mention of his wife was in ‘Open’ magazine where a lady from Gujarat called, ‘Jashodaben’ was claimed to the then Gujarat Chief Minister’s wife. However, Modi’s silence on the issue did not clear Modi’s relationship status. His recent acknowledgement that he was married, after filling the nomination form for the Lok Sabha Elections had created a stir as the opposition accused him for keeping it a secret.

Jashodaben married Narendra Modi when she was 17 and Modi was 18. But they split three years after marriage as Modi was busy building his political career.Surprisingly, Jashodaben blames destiny for the separation and says that as Modi was destined to serve the country he had to leave.While they decided to separate ways after three years of marriage, there were no fights between them according to Jashodaben After they separated ways, Jashodaben never remarried and decided to remain single for the rest of her life. But, today she expects Modi to invite her to stay with him at 7 Race Course Road, the Prime Minister’s residence.
Till today, she remembers Modi as a friendly person who took interest in talking to her and the household works.After being inspired by Modi’s wish, she pursued Primary Teacher’s Training (PTC) and got job as a teacher. Now, she is a retired school teacher and gets a monthly pension fo Rs 14, 000.
Today she feels lucky that she had brothers on whom she could depend upon and is thankful to them for supporting her throughtout her life. She keeps a track of Narendra Modi through TV news and newspapers. Her sister Vasanti says of her, “Jashoda would read and watch every bit of news about Narenbhai. Despite being abandoned, Jashoda never spoke ill of him. This is a true Indian woman for you.”
